The Teletubbies actor who played Tinky Winky ‘froze to death in the street’ after he collapsed near Liverpool waterfront.
Police confirmed yesterday they found Simon Shelton Barnes’ body at around 7.30am on January 17. it’s now emerged that he is believed to have died of ‘hypothermia’.
The much-loved trained dancer and choreographer, who played TinkyWinky in the hit childrens show,died suddenly while visiting the city from his home in Ampthill, Bbedfordshire.
She said: “I’m very floored at losing him, he was just the best company.
“He was just the best person to live with and we got on terribly well.
“I’m gobsmacked at losing him. He was charming and handsome and delicate and so lovely to be around.
“He wasn’t difficult, he was pleasurable and a delicate man.”
Simon took on the role of the purple handbag-wearing Teletubby between 1998 and 2001.
And his co-star John Summit, who played Dipsy, paid tribute to him on social media with a picture of the two of them.
Summit wrote: “What a week! RIP Simon Shelton aka Tinky Winky: remembering the many good times. Rest easy.”
Earlier today the character was pulled from Britain’s biggest toy fair after the news of Simon’s death emerged.
A spokesman for Bastion, who run the fair, said: “Having been made aware of the actor Simon Shelton, who played Tinky Winky in the Teletubbies, passing away, Toy Fair has liaised with the relevant licencors and have agreed to withdraw the Tinky Winky character out of respect for the rest of the fair.”
CBeebies also tweeted: “Very sad to hear Teletubbies actor Simon Shelton who played Tinky Winky has passed away.
